Amazon to hire 100,000 employees to deal with coronavirus

Starting in April, the online commerce giant will launch a wave of hires to increase its delivery capacity, which will go through warehouse workers and others dedicated to deliveries.

If the United States has not yet opted for containment measures, the fact remains that the European Union and the Schengen area have closed their borders, and that Italy or France have chosen to opt for a quarantine total, prohibiting gatherings and outings except on presentation of a certificate that allows you to go to food stores, pharmacies and tobacco press stores. Faced with this isolation, not only is the share of connected people increasing as is the incoming speed for ISPs, but more people will turn to online food ordering. As a result, Amazon, which is the undisputed deliverer in the West, will increase its delivery capacity according to the Wall Street Journal. The American newspaper reports that Jeff Bezos’ company will hire 100,000 employees in the United States to cope with an unprecedented wave of orders.

An unprecedented situation

In order to limit the spread of the Covid-19 coronavirus, employees of large technology companies are already invited to work from home: Google, Microsoft, Twitter, Apple, Facebook or Amazon have encouraged their employees to telecommute. While it is indeed possible for many people to work from home – enough to make you think about the future of the current organization of work – shopping however requires a completely different organization. In order not to leave their homes, Amazon estimates that a large part of the population will turn to its online sales site.

More than a third of Americans have an Amazon Prime subscription

And probably rightly so: in 2019, in the United States, there were 328 million citizens, of whom 112 million were registered in December 2019 with the Amazon Prime service according to Statista, i.e. more than a third of the population. Taking advantage of free delivery within 1 working day, many consumers will turn to the American site. To make itself more attractive, Amazon will increase the wages of all employees in its warehouses, deliveries and stores by $ 2 in the United States and Canada.
